Description
Offered is a rare one-of-a-kind document from 1826 related to land sold by the Easton family who were one of the original founders of Newport in the 1600's. Easton's Beach in Newport is named after Nicholas Easton (1542-1675). This document is printed but also has handwritten information in the hand of John H. Easton who sold a large plat of family owned land in the area of Easton's Beach. The document is signed by Easton. The land was sold to a member of the Winslow family. The Winslow's are also prominent Newporter's. This 195 year old document was recently found in the attic of a Newport estate. It measures approximately 17" tall by 13 1/2" wide. It has several folds and a few tears, but would look excellent in a proper frame. This belongs in a Newport Rhode Island colonial home or in a museum. Finds like this have become very rare as time goes on. It should be noted that many of the original documents in Newport at that time were printed at the Franklin Printing press by James Franklin, brother of Benjamin Franklin. The press was brought to Newport in the early 1700's.It was used here right up to 1856. Rhode Islands copy of the Declaration of Independence was printed on Franklins press . The document is signed "March 27,1826".
